Joseph and Margaret Smith nee Holmes, 2nd and 3rd Fleet convicts, like many in the valley the emancipists were buried on the land they loved in the Macdonald River Valley (near St Albans), here they were interviewed by Caroline Chisholm in 1845. The sarcophagus style grave has now collapsed and the inscription on the sandstone weathered away. Upon the suggestion of the current owner on 16 May 2018 a plaque with the original inscription and their life story was added by a small group of their descendants so that their proud history on this land may live on. The current owner has fenced the property to protect the graves from his cattle. Also in the tiny plot is the grave of their great-grandson William Duncomb. This is private property access is not available.
