Upper Bylong Road,
The station church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is now closed and, as is to be expected, the church and cemetery grounds are overgrown and neglected. We could find only four headstones in the long grass but we have since learned from David Billington of the Cathchurch website (see URL below) that there are several unmarked graves closer to the church building. We understand that the property is now (January 2007) to be sold but that safeguards will be put in place to ensure the preservation of and access to the cemetery.
The list of inscriptions was prepared from digital images and notes which Jean and I made of every visible inscription on 5 June 2002. We also referred to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages for further information.
UPDATE May 2015: Korean power utility KEPCO now owns the former Church and Cemetery of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at Upper Bylong, and intend to exhume and relocate all the burials from this cemetery. KEPCO intend that the exhumations will be completed with due care and reverence and will be reburied at Bylong or at another location to be specified. Anyone with knowledge of any unmarked burials is encouraged to come forward. Relatives and descendants are invited to contact the present owners to register their interest in the exhumation and relocation of burials.
Bylong is a rural village about 79km north-east of Mudgee and 53km north of Rylstone. The erstwhile Catholic Church is on the western side of the Upper Bylong Road, 4.5km from the village of Bylong. The tiny cemetery is within the grounds of the now disused church.
Bylong is in the Catholic Diocese of Bathurst. Enquiries should be directed to the Chancery Office, 84 George Street (PO Box 246), Bathurst NSW 2785.
