1808 Windeyer Rd
This little cemetery has benefited from lots of care and attention since our first visit two years ago. This time, we found it in neat and tidy condition, with the grass trimmed and the weeds under control.
Two old stones, obviously fallen many years ago, remain where they were but the other stones are generally upright and in good order. Unfortunately, several early sandstone monuments are badly eroded. Markers were found dating from 1872 to 2004.
Jean and I made digital images and notes of every visible inscription in April 2002 and updated these on 27 May 2004. In compiling the list, we referred to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages to clarify some names and dates, and also to the death and funeral announcements and obituaries published in the Mudgee Guardian and Gulgong Advertiser for additional information.
Ray Cork visited the cemetery in November 2020, added recent burials and updated details of all inscriptions.
The old gold-mining centre of Windeyer is about 39km from Mudgee NSW. If driving from Mudgee, take the Castlereagh Highway towards Gulgong for 4km and turn left onto the Hill End Road. After a further 17.4km, turn left at the Grattai CWA hall onto the Pyramul Road. From here it is 17km to the village of Windeyer. The cemetery is located at the rear of St Killian's Catholic Church on the corner of Windgraves Road.
Windeyer is within the Catholic Diocese of Bathurst. Enquiries should be directed to the Chancery Office, 84 George Street (PO Box 246), Bathurst NSW 2795; phone 6331 3611
