John, known as 'Jack', was born at Broughton Creek near Nowra and arrived in Cootamundra in 1880, aged 8 years. He attended Cootamundra Public School from 8 to 14 years of age (1880-86). After leaving school about 1886, John lived with his brothers Ted and William for five years on their selection at Narraburra Station. 1894 Jack is shown as freehold Grogan. Later he brought his own bullock team. He carted wheat and wool to Temora for four years. The coming of the railway to Temora forced John to sell his team. After this he worked for about 6 years on a selection near Wallendbeen where he met Ida Jane Atkinson. They were married at Cootamundra in 1896. In 1897 Jack's father Henry 'Harry' bought 80 acres of land beside the Cootamundra Race course for 80 pounds. This land was given to John in 1904. John 'Jack' & Ida ran the property as a dairy farm. They called the farm "Eumerilla".
