Some neighbours near the old Falls Hotel, Katoomba, found William Auld in a severe state of illness on Sunday morning. They notified special constable William Millar of his condition, who, on visiting him found him dead. The old man had lived at Katoomba for about 40 years and was over 80 years of age. He used to work at the old coal mine where his eyesight, failed him. Since giving up that work he had occupied an old collage near Katoomba Falls, depending mainly on an old-age pension for support. He was a native of North Shields, (England) and came of a well-connected family, a brother being a Church of England minister. Of a retiring disposition, little more is known of the old man locally, except that he was a widower with no family, his late wife having been an hotel-keeper in the Newcastle district. It is understood that the cottage in which deceased lived, belonged to his late wife's executors, he having the right to tenancy rent free.[22-8-1924 The Blue Mountains Echo page 2]
