Mutton Falls Anglican
Lowes Mount Road,
Although no longer in regular use, St Peter’s Church is still used for special occasions, weddings and funerals. The two-acre site, given by the pioneer Webb Family for a church and cemetery, probably in the 1860s, is beautifully maintained by one of their descendants today. The lawns were mown and grass trimmed both around and within the grave enclosures, the stones were standing straight and several of the old monuments have been restored. We found inscriptions dating from 1865 and many fine examples of stonemasonry. A columbarium has been erected within the grounds but as yet contains no ashes.
Jean and I visited the cemetery on two occasions in January and February 2005 and made digital images and notes of every visible inscription. In compiling this list, we also consulted the NSW index of births, deaths and marriages and the World War 2 Nominal Roll to help determine some names and dates and for additional information.
From the village of Tarana, take the Mutton Falls Road for 4km and then turn left onto the Oberon (Lowes Mount) Road. The Cemetery is in the grounds of St Peters Anglican Church, about 100 m from the intersection.
Mutton Falls is within the Anglican Diocese of Bathurst. Contact the Diocesan office at 3 Church Street, Bathurst NSW 2795. (firstname.lastname@example.org).
