The cemetery was established in 1883. It was managed by trustees under NSW legislation which continued after the formation of the Federal Capital Territory, later the Australian Capital Territory. The Canberra Public Cemeteries Trust took control in 1988.
It is a traditional Australian rural cemetery with a diverse range of headstones and a columbarium native garden and plaque wall created more recently. Burials reflect the historic families of the district with signage describing the cemetery and local history. While divided into religious denominations, as with many cemeteries, these haven't been adhered to strictly.
The Cemetery remains active and is well maintained. It contains rare and endangered flora which are monitored and managed by the ACT Government and landcare groups.
