Duffield Graves
near Mount Stromlo Road, Mount Stromlo
The gravesite is located in a bushland setting on Mt Stromlo within the grounds of the Mount Stromlo Observatory. WG Duffield is buried here along with the ashes of his wife DT Duffield and daughter JD Duffield. The gravesite is enclosed (2017) within a white picket fence marked with a white painted wooden cross bearing the initials WGD and the words Per ardua ad astra (Through struggle to the stars). There are three separate grave inscriptions, one each for the Duffields. WG Duffield was the founder and first director of the Commonwealth Solar Observatory which is located on the mountain. He selected the gravesite on a ridge overlooking the Murrumbidgee Valley. The gravesite was damaged severely during the firestorm of 18 Jan 2003 and was restored later that year.
The gravesite is several hundred metres north of the Satellite Laser Ranging Obervatory at the end of Mt Stromlo Road, Mount Stromlo, ACT. Access is by foot or bicycle along an unsealed track.
