Sunny Corner

Dark Corner Road,

Sunny Corner

When we visited this historical burial ground in January 2005, it presented a sad and sorry picture. It had long been overgrown by trees, scrub, blackberry and noxious weeds. Many of the graves, although enclosed by wrought iron or concrete surrounds, have no headstones and many of those that remain are difficult to access. Some stones have fallen or been vandalised or perhaps been broken by falling timber.

The cemetery covers 20 acres and was laid out in denominational portions - Anglican, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian and Methodist/Wesleyan - as well as an undesignated area probably reserved for expansion and a general portion. In consequence, there are several small and isolated groups of monuments that are hard to find amongst the undergrowth. The earliest known burial took place in 1885 and the latest in 1950.

Previously the responsibility of Evans Shire Council, it is now administered by the Bathurst Regional Council. BRC recently commissioned Conservation Management Plans for all cemeteries under its control, including Sunny Corner. The Sunny Corner CMP, now in draft form, has kindly been made available for study and comment by its author, Barbara J Hickson.

From all available evidence, the names of 154 persons known to have been buried or probably buried at Sunny Corner Cemetery have been compiled. Most of the graves are unmarked and therefore no inscription images are attached to those entries. Data on the unmarked graves of Elizabeth and Michael Burke and Andrew Burke Taylor were supplied by Sandra Cullen. Details of the other unmarked graves have been sourced from the BRC Cemetery Study 2007-8 B J Hickson. Much of that material was compiled by Vicki Powyrs c. 1991.

Jean and I made digital images and notes of every inscription we could find on 6 January 2005. The list was compiled with reference to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and early church records for additional information.

Sunny Corner, originally known as Mitchell, is a small historic village near Portland. If travelling from Lithgow, take the Great Western Highway towards Bathurst for 38km to the village of Meadow Flat and turn onto Sunny Corner Road. At Sunny Corner, take the Dark Corner Road for 3.1km. The Cemetery is hidden by bush from the road but there is a cemetery signpost at the entrance track on the left hand side of the road.

The cemetery is administered by the Bathurst Regional Council. For further information, contact Council at PMB 17, Bathurst NSW 2795; phone: 02 6333 6111; email: council@bathurst.nsw.gov.au.
