Spicers Creek

Gulgong Road,

Spicers Creek

This little cemetery is not much more than 100 years old, the earliest memorial found being dated 1891. Apart from one location of ashes, there appear to have been no interments here for nearly 40 years. The cemetery contains a small number of graves in three portions over a comparatively large area but there is nothing to indicate what those portions are.

The grounds are fenced to exclude stock and the grass in the immediate vicinity of the graves has been controlled with herbicide. Nevertheless, when we visited the site, access to the monumental portions was difficult through long grass and burrs. There is no evidence of vandalism.

We visited the cemetery on 13 June 2002 and made digital images and notes of every visible inscription. In compiling this list, we also referred to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages for further information.

Spicers Creek is a small settlement about half way between Wellington and Gulgong. From Gulgong or Mudgee, take the Wellington Road to the village of Goolma. Avoiding the turnoff to Dubbo, continue along the Wellington Road for 12km when a small church will be seen on a rise on the left hand side. Turn left immediately past the old partly constructed railway underpass at the cemetery sign. Follow the farm track for about 500m to the cemetery entrance.

The authority responsible for its administration and upkeep is Wellington Shire Council, PO Box 62, Wellington NSW 2820 (email: mail@wellington.nsw.gov,au). However, it is understood that Council retains virtually no records.
