Sofala Catholic

Upper Turon Road,

The grave markers, although few in number, are found in several small groups scattered over several acres. Jean and I visited the cemetery on 17 June 2004 and made digital images and took notes of every visible inscription. We found dates as early as 1862 and as late as 1947.

More isolated from town than the Anglican cemetery, there is little or no evidence of vandalism here. There are only a few fallen stones and most of even the oldest remain quite legible. However, the grounds appeared to receive little or no maintenance and rabbit holes presented a real hazard.

Since that time, the Sofala Catholic Cemetery has passed into the control of the Bathurst Regional Council. In 2007, BRC commissioned Conservation Management Plans for all the cemeteries under its control, including this one. We are grateful to Council and to Kristy Haylan for information on several of the unmarked graves on the site.

When compiling the list, we also referred to the data displayed on Sofala's Heritage Wall and to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages for additional information.

From the Sofala shops, travel east to the end of Denison Street, turn right into Davis Street, then left into Upper Turon Road. Follow this road alongside the Turon River for 900m when the cemetery will be seen on a rise to the right.
