New Olivers Road,
This little cemetery adjoins the St John’s Union Church (that celebrated its centenary on 10 September 2006) and contains memorials dating from 1859 to 1983. It was rather overgrown and difficult to access when we visited the cemetery in 2002 but has since been cleaned up by the Mid-Western Regional Council ahead of the centenary celebrations. It showed no evidence of vandalism. Monuments include some striking and unusual stones. There are several unmarked grave mounds.
Jean and I made digital images and took notes of all the visible markers in the cemetery on 14 August 2002. We also referred to the NSW BDM indexes to determine some dates and for additional information.
New Olivers Road runs south off the Castlereagh Highway on the lower eastern side of the long climb up Cherry Tree Hill. The cemetery is only 100 metres from the Highway.
The Mid-Western Regional Council is now responsible for the cemetery. For further information, contact Council at PO Box 156, Mudgee NSW 2850; phone 02 6378 2850; email: council@mudgee.nsw.gov.au
