Mays Hill, formerly known as Western Road, is another of Parramatta's historic cemeteries, it's beginnings dating from 1839, and contains the graves of many pioneers whose descendants still reside in the district today. The cemetery has suffered over the years from vandalism and also from the expansion and contraction of the clay soil on which it is located. Consequently, there are many fallen and broken headstones, some missing wholly or in part, and others lying face down. However, the cemetery is now receiving much needed protection, maintenance and a degree of restoration from Holroyd City Council and the Friends of Mays Hill Cemetery group. It was classified by the National Trust in 1979.
The pictures were taken and listed by Michael Brookhouse in June and July 2011. Michael's images may be downloaded from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. This was compiled with reference to the NSW online indices of births, deaths and marriages and to the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional information.
