Murrurundi Catholic

Polding Street,

Murrurundi Catholic Cemetery is located behind St Joseph's Catholic Church and runs through to O'Connell Street. With monuments dating from 1842, it contains the graves of the town's founders, Peter and Thomas Haydon who died in 1842 and 1855 respectively. Another grave of note is that of Elizabeth Hall, mother of bushranger Ben Hall, who died in 1869.

Mark Asbury has visited St Joseph's cemetery on a number of occasions during 2010 and has photographed every visible inscription. His research has extended, with permission, to the turning of fallen stones where practicable, of which there are not a few. The cemetery has suffered from the ravages of time and no doubt periodic vandalism. Many of the older sandstones have flaked and eroded but the inscriptions that Mark has been able to decipher account for most of them.

Mark's images may be viewed from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. That list has been compiled with reference to the NSW indices of births, deaths and marriages and to the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional information.

Murrurundi Catholic Cemetery is almost opposite the railway station in Polding Street. Lat -31.769198, Long 150.838127
