Rookwood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium
Rookwood Crematorium
The crematorium was designed by Frank Bloomfield in Italianate style for the NSW Cremation Company Ltd. It was built on land granted by the NSW Government. It was the first crematorium opened in the state and the first cremation occurred on 28 May 1925. Over time, extensive landscaping and gardens have evolved extending the original site from 1.8 hectares to 8 hectares.
Bloomfield also designed the Northern Suburbs crematorium at North Ryde, Sydney.
The crematorium is located off Memorial Avenue in the Rookwood Necropolis. It is approximately 600m from the Weeroona Road vehicle entrance gate on the eastern side of the Necropolis.
Rookwood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium is operated by the InvoCare company.
