The surrounding area is very rocky ('Molong' means place of rocks) so it must have been difficult to find a piece of ground large enough and suitable for a cemetery. The grounds have been laid out in denominational portions, which are not identified in any way. A small lawn cemetery and a columbarium wall have been added in recent years. Burials appear to have commenced here in the 1860s, from which decade there remain nine readable inscriptions. There are no less than 8 centenarians commemorated at Molong Cemetery, the oldest being James William Hull who died at the age of 109 years in 1961 – at which time he was acknowledged as the oldest person in Australia.

Unfortunately, there is some evidence of vandalism, mostly in the older part of the Anglican portion, but this seems to have occurred some years ago. The grounds are in reasonable condition, in view of the current drought conditions, but there are very few shade trees and no amenities. The Cabonne Shire Council does not possess an overall plan of the cemetery but does hold plans of each portion with records of burials occurring in more recent years only.

We compiled this list from digital images and notes that Jean and I made of every visible inscription during several visits in December 2002 and January 2003. We also consulted the NSW index of births, deaths and marriages to help determine difficult to read names and dates and for further information. We wish to acknowledge with thanks the kind assistance of Catherine Mackenzie of the Molong Museum in identifying the various portions for us in the cemetery.

From the township of Molong, take the Mitchell Highway towards Wellington for about 1km, turning left onto the Yeoval Road. Continue on the Yeoval Road for 1.4km, across the railway line, to the Molong Cemetery Road on the right hand side.

The cemetery is administered and maintained by the Cabonne Shire Council. Contact Council at PO Box 17, Molong NSW 2866 (email: council@cabonne.nsw.gov.au).
