159 Point Lonsdale Rd

Point Lonsdale

The original burial ground was near the foreshore, and was the last resting place for an unknown number of men and women who died on the perilous sea voyage to Australia in the 1840s. In 1859 their bodies were re-interred in the current cemetery. The original trustees – Williams, Robertson, Leihy and Simpkin – were appointed for their professional skill rather than religious affiliation but by the 1880s the Queenscliff cemetery was managed on denominational lines. The cemetery has a wonderfully diverse biosphere with a clump of the iconic, windswept moonah (black paperbark) trees as its centrepiece.
