Helensburgh General Cemetery is maintained in good condition by Wollongong City Council and, at the time of listing, had been recently mown. However, photography of the older sections was difficult due to shadows cast by surrounding trees. Denominational portions in the monumental sections are clearly marked but no row or grave numbering is visible. Many of the older headstones are in poor condition and difficult to read with fallen headstones common. Numerous inscriptions record accidental death due to injuries sustained in nearby coal mines.
Inscriptions date from 1887 and the cemetery is still in use with recent burials noted. There is a small columbarium and several garden areas where ashes are placed. A Lawn section has recently been developed. There are no facilities provided other than town water and a small shelter shed.
The digital images were taken by Ray Cork during July 2009. Ray compiled the list of inscriptions with reference to the NSW BDM online search facility and the Australian War Memorial Nominal Rolls for WW1 and WW2 for additional information.
Cemetery Road is on the southern fringe of town, the cemetery located on the corner of Frew Avenue.
Helensburgh Cemetery is administered by Wollongong City Council. For further information contact the Wollongong City Memorial Gardens staff located at the Crematorium Office, Berkeley Rd, Unanderra, NSW; phone 02 4227 7880; or visit the website.
