Smithfield General Cemetery appears to have been established in the late 1870s. It occupies a broad but shallow site in Dublin Street. Most of the memorials are upright and legible, although some have fallen and broken. There are no tall monuments in this cemetery, probably in deference to the swelling and contraction of the clay subsoil. The grounds are maintained in good order.
Ruth King has contributed a list and images of all visible inscriptions at this site. Her pictures may be downloaded from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. That list was compiled from those images and with reference to the NSW indices of births, deaths and marriages and the Australian War Memorials online military rolls for additional information.
Smithfield General Cemetery is located between The Horsley Drive and Victoria Street with its entrance in Dublin Street and is 1.8 km west of the Cumberland Highway.
Smithfield Cemetery is administered by the Syrian Orthodox Church. Cemetery Coordinator 0478942085
