off Runnyford Road,
Nelligen General Cemetery occupies a small site surrounded by trees on all sides. The cemetery is in two parts, separated by a timbered gully. One lone grave marked with a white timber cross is located in bush to the east of the main cemetery area approx 10m from Runnyford Rd.
Inscriptions date from 1865 and the cemetery is still in use with recent burials noted. At the time of listing it was recently mowed and in good order with no sign of vandalism. Portions and rows are not designated and there are no facilities.
It appears that some restoration work has recently been carried out with many otherwise unmarked graves now identified by identical white wooden markers with brass nameplates. A columbarium has also been recently erected but is not yet in use.
The digital images were taken by Ray Cork during December 2008. His images may be downloaded from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. Ray also compiled the inscription list with reference to the NSW BDM online search facility and the Australian War Memorial nominal rolls for additional information.
Subsequent to Ray's visit, Averyl Lindgren alerted us to the fact that there is another small isolated portion at Nelligen Cemetery that is not visible from the main area. She has made digital images of the grave markers and these have now been added to the list of inscriptions. Thank you, Averyl. Note: Researchers may be interested to know that Averyl has published three books on Nelligen (The Nelligen Trilogy). Enquiries directed to this site will be passed on to her.
Nelligen Cemetery is located on the southern side of Runnyford Rd, approximately 200m west of the intersection of Reid Street and is visible from Runnyford Rd.
Nelligen General Cemetery is administered by Eurobodalla Shire Council. For further information, contact Council at PO Box 99, Moruya NSW 2537; phone 02 44741000; email: email@example.com
