Gerringong General Cemetery occupies a steeply sloping site on a headland overlooking the Pacific Ocean. John Arthur, who visited and photographed the cemetery in September 2007, estimates the grade as around one in five in parts. He says that the portions include Anglican, Catholic, Presbyterian, Uniting and Interdenominational (or General). The portions are all signposted but were a little difficult for him to follow on the hill.

The monumental portions contain inscriptions dating from the 1860s and include a large number of substantial monuments with beautiful carvings. There are also several sandstone monuments, some of which are now quite badly eroded. The site also contains three columbaria, two of which face each other. John says that the cemetery was in good condition and well maintained by the Kiama Municipal Council. He found no sign of vandalism.

John's images (some of which are quite spectacular) may be downloaded from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. That list was compiled from his images and with reference to the NSW BDM indices and to the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional information.

This cemetery includes many members of families who immigrated from the small area around Kilskeery Parish near the border of Co. Tyrone & Co. Fermanagh in Northern Ireland in the mid 19thC. These were generally all Methodist and many of their descendants intermarried. Family names include Bleakley, Chittick, Johnstone, Love, Moffitt, Nelson, Newman and Sharpe.

At Gerringong, turn east off the Princes Highway into Belinda Street and continue to its end (1.5km). The cemetery is on the right hand side of the road.

Gerringong Cemetery is administered by the Kiama Municipal Council. For further information, contact Council at PO Box 75, Kiama NSW 2533; phone 02 4232 0444; email: council@kiama.nsw.gov.au
