Established in 1878, Lutwyche Cemetery is located on the north side of Brisbane, approximately 10 kilometres from the CBD. Covering 15 acres, this historical cemetery has laid to rest many residents of Brisbane as well as Returned Service Personnel.
Brisbane City Council's cemeteries and crematoria honour those who have made Brisbane the diverse and livable city that it is today. Council manages 12 cemeteries and three crematoria catering for burials, cremations and memorials for ashes. The Hemmant, Mount Gravatt and Pinnaroo cemeteries offer a range of burial options. The remaining nine cemeteries are historic sites with limited burial options.
To reflect the diversity of Brisbane residents, Council's cemeteries offer burial settings developed in cooperation with Brisbane's Greek, Serbian and Russian Orthodox Churches, and members of our Italian, Croatian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Orthodox Jewish and Muslim communities. Council continually upgrades and expands its cemetery and crematorium centres.
Council can assist with funeral planning at Council venues. Read more on burial options, memorials for ashes, memorial chapels and function rooms, memorial plaques and urns, and pre-purchasing of burial sites, cremation or ash memorials.
Brisbane City Council maintains records of people buried or cremated at (interments) our cemeteries and crematoriums. Unfortunately, not all records are complete because Council only gained full control of Brisbane's public cemeteries in July 1930. Before that time, a number of trusts established under Queensland law managed these cemeteries.
