HISTORY OF GLADSTONE CEMETERY

MacCabe surveyed the Gladstone Cemetery in 1854. The site was selected by Maurice Charles O'Connell, the Government Resident. The first recorded burial occurred in 1859. A particularly large and impressive monument in the cemetery is dedicated to Richard Hetherington, Gladstone's first mayor and second Postmaster, who died while delivering mail in 1870.

General Description of Gladstone Cemetery:

The Gladstone Cemetery is located on the corner of the Dawson Highway and Cemetery Road on a slightly raised site, with grass and shrubs and some trees along the boundaries towards the streets. In the west the cemetery borders onto Police Creek and in the south there is a shopping complex and carpark.

The cemetery has a lawn and a monumental section. Vehicular access to the monumental section is from Cemetery Road on a sealed road leading through an avenue
of mature trees. There is a variety of styles of memorials present at the cemetery, ranging from memorial plaques on slanted concrete bases, headstones of varying shapes and materials to obelisk monuments.

Grave surrounds include wrought iron fences and concrete borders, which are sometimes filled in and decorated with tiles. The lawn section also has vehicular access from Cemetery Road, a short distance further west. The grassed area is divided by a system of sealed roads into three rectangular sections. The gravesites are marked by plaques and several are decorated with flowers. There are some trees on the perimeter of this area.

The earliest recorded burial is 1859, at Gladstone Cemetery and is now classified a Closed Cemetery (Closed for new grave site purchases - reserved site interment only).
