181 Namoi River Road
The Manilla General Cemetery is divided into denominational portions. It includes a columbarium and a cenotaph but, as yet, no lawn cemetery. One gains the impression from the wide expanses between monuments in the old Anglican portion at the front of the cemetery that many of the early markers have fallen or been vandalised and their remains removed. In any case, it is apparent that there are now many unmarked graves in that area.
We visited and photographed the cemetery on 21 and 22 September 2006 and found the grounds in good order with lawns mown and weeds under control. There was no problem with broken glass or rabbit holes.
In compiling the list of inscriptions, we consulted the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and military records for further information.
From Manilla's shopping centre, head north towards Barraba. After crossing the river, take the first right into Charles Street; at the end of Charles St, turn left into Arthur Street and at the end of Arthur Street, right into Namoi River Road. From this point, it is 1.8km to the cemetery.
The cemetery is administered by the Tamworth Regional Council. Contact Council at PO Box 555, Tamworth NSW 2340; phone: 02 6767 5555; email: trc@tamworth.nsw.gov.au
