Bingara General Cemetery occupies a generous, gently sloping site on the outskirts of the town. It is laid out in denominational and non-denominational portions and, in more recent years, has been supplemented with a lawn cemetery and a columbarium. A graphic illustration of the cemetery layout has been erected at the main entrance. The portions are signposted and the rows are indicated by markers attached to the boundary fence at one end of each row.

The whole cemetery has obviously benefited from the tender loving care of many persons. One such gentleman is Bob Kirk, who has spent countless hours over years researching the cemetery, developing its records of burials and encouraging its preservation. In 2006, Gwydir Shire Council formally recognised his invaluable work by naming him Citizen of the Year.

The grounds are maintained in excellent condition by Council and by the extensive voluntary labour of a retired council employee. There are shade trees, ample parking, several benches and a toilet block. The site is well fenced and protected by a grid from straying stock.

Bingara General Cemetery inscriptions were listed by Roma Waldron in 1994 and she included details of known but unmarked graves supplied by Council at that time. Reg and Jean McDonell visited the cemetery in September 2006 and made digital images of all visible inscriptions. This update revealed that almost one-third of the known graves in the cemetery are now unmarked. The absence of a camera icon beside an entry on the inscription list indicates that we did not find any legible marker for that grave in 2006.

In compiling the list, the NSW BDM indexes and military records were consulted for further information and fuller identification of some burials. In the Old Anglican portion, some rows wander to the extent that it is difficult to determine to what row some graves belong. For that reason, row numbers quoted in that portion should be regarded as indicative only.

The images of the inscriptions may be downloaded from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery.

From Bingara's CBD (Maitland Street) drive south towards Barraba, turn right into Brainard Street and, at its end, left into Riddell Street. The cemetery lane is on the right hand side of Riddell Street, before reaching the stock yards, and is signposted.

Bingara Cemetery is administered by the Gwydir Shire Council. For further information, contact Council at Maitland Street (Locked Bag 5), Bingara NSW 2404; phone: 02 6724 2000; email mail@bingara.nsw.gov.au
