Cassilis Anglican

Cassilis Road,

The cemetery is within the grounds of St Columba of Iona Anglican Church. It appears to predate the present stone church building by about 20 years as the earliest monument we found was dated 1882. The grass had been recently mown around the graves but many of the older graves, especially those enclosed with fences, were quite overgrown and their stones difficult to access and read when we visited the site. Unfortunately, several of the older stones have fallen face down and could not be transcribed, others have fallen and broken and yet others are now illegible.

We understand that the grounds have since been tidied up and the images above, supplied by Hilary Parker, show what the area looks like in May 2008.

Jean and I visited the cemetery on 13 May 2004 and made digital images and took notes of every visible inscription. This list was compiled with reference to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and to military records for additional information.

Cassilis is a small village with a population of around 100 persons, located just off the Golden Highway between Merriwa and Dunedoo. After turning into Cassilis Road from the highway, it is just 900 metres to the church and cemetery on the left hand side of the road.
