Wellington Lawn Cemetery was established in 1969 to complement the monumental cemetery next to it. Unusually for a modern lawn cemetery, it has been divided into denominational portions, all of which are clearly signposted. Grave lot numbers are shown on each beam although the beams themselves have not been labelled. The internal roadways are paved and in good condition and, despite the drought conditions when we visited the cemetery, the lawns and gardens were well maintained. A small toilet block has been added in recent times to replace that demolished in the adjoining general cemetery.
I estimate that about 98 per cent of the graves have been marked in some way with at least a name or a name and date. However, we found a number of old wooden crosses that were unreadable, so details of those burials could not be included here.
As Council could not provide a plan of the cemetery layout, we drew our own (available on request), made digital images of every visible inscription and recorded the location of each grave. The original records were made in October 2002 and updated on several occasions since then.
From the Wellington CBD, take the Mitchell Highway east towards Orange for approximately 2km. The cemetery is on the right hand (southern) side of the highway, adjoining the Wellington General Cemetery. Vehicle access is gained from the rear of the cemetery. Lat -32.579582 Long 148.950995
