Wattle Flat RC

Bathurst Road,

Wattle Flat

We were most impressed with this old cemetery. When we visited, we found it in immaculate condition with the grass cut and trimmed around all the graves and no broken glass or litter to be seen. Gracious old trees around the perimeter enhance the setting. We found inscriptions dating from 1860 right through to the present time. Several older stones have fallen but most remain legible.

Jean and I made digital images and notes of every visible inscription on 17 June 2004. In compiling this list, we also consulted the NSW index of births, deaths and marriages as well as the inscriptions on the Sofala heritage Wall giving information about Wattle Flat pioneers, some of whom are buried here.

The historic gold town of Wattle Flat is 7km from Sofala on the way to Bathurst. The Catholic Church of the Blessed Mother Mary MacKillop, a modern building, is on the western side of the main road at the southern end of the village with its cemetery at the rear of the church

Wattle Flat is within the Catholic Diocese of Bathurst. Enquiries should be directed to the Chancery Office, 84 George Street (PO Box 246), Bathurst NSW 2795; phone 6331 3611
