Frequently Asked Questions
Before contacting the Australian Cemetery Index, please check the answers to these Frequently Asked Questions.
Q: My ancestor was buried in this cemetery. Why isn't he/she on the list of inscriptions?
A: We list headstone inscriptions and do not usually have any information about unmarked graves. If the name is not listed, it means that we found no legible inscription for him/her. Remember that in most cemeteries, around a quarter of all graves are unmarked.
Q: How can I find out where my ancestor's unmarked grave is in this cemetery?
A: See the administration details on the cemetery page. Wherever possible, contact details are given for further enquiries.
Q: I'm looking for the grave of my ancestor; can you tell me where he is buried?
A: All information we have is on the website. If he is not in our database (see Name Search), we can't help. If you purchase a death certificate or transcription, this should show the place and date of burial.
Q: When will a certain cemetery be listed?
A: See the Latest News page for work in progress. This is being continually expanded, however resources are limited and we are unable to forecast if or when a particular cemetery may be added.
Q: How can I arrange for a headstone to be erected or repaired?
A: Contact a funeral director in the area.
Q: My ancestor doesn't have a headstone. Can he be added to the list?
A: Yes, provided you have reasonable evidence that he was buried there e.g. a death certificate, transcription, death or funeral notice etc.
Q: Can I give more information to be added to my ancestor's particulars?
A: Yes, but within reason. Full dates of birth and death, name of spouse, maiden or birth name and whether the person had descendants (but not their names) are all acceptable. But, as an index of monumental inscriptions, we are not equipped to hold more than this.
Q: I've just refurbished a grave. Can you update your picture, please?
A: We do not update cemetery pictures on a regular basis but only as opportunities arise.
Q: Can I send you a picture of a new headstone?
A: Yes, but it needs to be a digital image of reasonable resolution - at least 1000 x 750 pixels in .jpg format but larger is preferred.
Q: Can you tell me more about a particular person or family buried at this cemetery?
A: No. All our information is already shown. A local historical society may be able to help you. There are a few on our links page.
Q: Can you put me in touch with any members of the deceased's family?
A: No.
