On the banks of the Cudgegong River, 20km east of Mudgee, the small village of Apple Tree Flat is believed to have been first settled c.1850. Once the centre of a thriving dairying industry on small holdings, its present population of around 50 is involved in farming and grape growing. Burials commenced here in the early 1880s and the cemetery is still in use. On each of our visits to the site, we have found the grounds and fencing to be in good order and weeds under control. One old stone is broken and the top of another missing but otherwise there are no indications of vandalism.

Jean and I originally listed this cemetery in June 2002 and updated it on 27 May 2004. The list was compiled from digital images and notes we made of every visible inscription and with reference to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and to the death and funeral announcements and obituaries published in the Mudgee Guardian & Gulgong Advertiser.

Tannabutta cemetery is located on the northern side of the Sydney Road (Castlereagh Highway) just east of the village of Apple Tree Flat, 20km from Mudgee, and is signposted.
