Burials commenced at Wollar General Cemetery in the 1870s but, for many years, it was mostly a Catholic cemetery as Protestant burials continued at nearby St Luke's Anglican Cemetery. This site contains several groups of graves spread over about 5 acres but there are no portion or row markers. It is believed that the cemetery also contains some Aboriginal graves but there is no information available as to the possible location of these unmarked burials.

On each of our visits, we found the cemetery grounds in generally good condition with grass mown and fencing intact and no evidence of vandalism. There are no amenities.

Much of the data that appears on the inscription list, especially the unmarked burials, was generously provided by Lynne Robinson and Gai McDermott of Wollar who, since 1985, have been researching the families of the Wollar District. They have built an impressive archive that would be of interest to other researchers of those families. Lynne and Gai are willing to share their data or receive additional information and would welcome enquiries through this site.

Jean and I compiled the original list from digital images and notes we made of every visible marker in May 2002. We updated it in May 2004 and Gai McDermott further updated it in August 2011. In compiling the list, we also consulted the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and death and funeral announcements and obituaries published in the Mudgee Guardian & Gulgong Advertiser.

From Mudgee, take the Cassilis Road north for 9 km to Budgee Budgee, then turn right onto the Wollar Road from which point it is 40km to the village of Wollar. As you enter the village, turn left at the sign pointing to Ulan (Barigan Street) from where it is 700 metres to the cemetery laneway (signposted).

The cemetery is administered and maintained by the Mid-Western Regional Council. Contact Council at PO Box 156, Mudgee NSW; phone: 02 63782850; email: council@mudgee.nsw.gov.au
