Warren General Cemetery
Address: Industrial Access Road, Warren 2824 NSW
Situated about three km from the CBD, the Warren Cemetery comprises a fairly large monumental section, in which we found inscriptions dating from 1875, and a lawn cemetery which was officially opened in 1992 but with several burials before that date. There is no columbarium wall but provision is made for the interment of ashes in the lawn cemetery.
The monumental cemetery is in generally good order. It is unfortunate, however, that several of the oldest monuments have been vandalised at some stage. The portions are clearly marked but there are no row markers. Weeds are controlled by means of herbicides so there is no grass to soften the appearance of the site. Copious quantities of broken glass from flower containers are scattered all over the cemetery and present a danger to visitors.
On the two occasions we visited, we found the Lawn Cemetery in beautiful condition. The gardens and lush, mown and trimmed lawns in this dry climate are a credit to the Council and its workers. Shady trees, a small lake and several park benches all add to its appeal and invite rest and reflection.
Jean and I compiled this list of inscriptions from digital images and notes made of every monument in the cemetery over two visits during December 2003. We also referred to the NSW indexes of Births, Deaths and Marriages to clarify some difficult to read names and dates and for further information. Images of inscriptions may be viewed and downloaded from the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery.
Administration and maintenance of the cemetery is the responsibility of the Warren Shire Council, PO Box 6, Warren NSW 2824 (email@example.com).
