Wallerawang General Cemetery

Also known as Pipers Flat General.

Address: Portland Road, Wallerawang 2845 NSW

It is possible to be precise about its beginning since the headstone for Lancelot Richard Allinson, who died on 28 Oct 1883, claims that he was the first person to be interred in this cemetery. Signs within the cemetery indicate the various denominational areas, except for one unmarked portion that is probably non-denominational. There are no row markers. We found several sandstone monuments, all showing erosion to greater or less extent, but the majority of the monuments are of marble or granite. The marble tablets of the post-war era are mostly very difficult to read. Several of the older marble memorials have fallen and broken, possibly the results of vandalism at some time.

A small columbarium set beside a lawn cemetery of recent origin and plantings of young trees, lawns and gardens greatly enhance the appearance of the whole site. The grounds were in excellent condition when we visited, with the grass cut and trimmed and a minimal amount of broken glass. There are no amenities.

This list was compiled from digital images that Jean and I made of every visible inscription and from notes taken on site over two visits in late November and early December 2004. We also referred to the NSW index of births, deaths and marriages and the World War 2 Nominal Roll to clarify some hard to read names and dates and for further information. Images of the inscriptions may be viewed and downloaded form the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery.
