The Hannell Family crypt stands in an isolated location on Lot 1 of the New England Highway at Hexham. It bears only three plaques, of John Hannell and his wife Mary Ann, who died in 1891 and 1902 respectively and, on the rear of the structure, a memorial plaque for Norman Muncaster who died in 1988.

Joe Sharman visited and photographed the crypt and its inscriptions in June 2012. Joe says he has been told that the crypt once contained more remains. However, in the 1960s, it was vandalised and the Masonic regalia of John Hannell stolen. At that time, the other coffins were removed for burial elsewhere - probably Sandgate.

Joe's pictures may be downloaded from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. The list was compiled with reference to the NSW indices of births, deaths and marriages for additional information.

The Hannell crypt is adjacent to the Hunter River off the right hand (eastern) side of the New England Highway, 1km north of Hexham. Lat -32.817467, Long 151.681129
