Dagworth Hotel Cemetery
Address: Old Winton Road, via Kynuna 4823 QLD
Dagworth Hotel Cemetery, near the Dagworth Hotel, contains a small number of graves with six known burials between 1894 and 1918. Peter and Karen Patterson-Kane visited Dagworth in May 2011 and have contributed images they took at the time. Peter says that individual graves were fenced but the tiny cemetery has recently been enclosed by a substantial steel post and rail boundary fence. There are no headstones, however a plaque at the site provides the following information:
"This cemetery was associated with the Dagworth Hotel on the old Winton to Cloncurry Road. Coach services running along the road stopped at mail change stations, which were generally located at 30 kilometre intervals, depending on water supplies. The mail changes were kept by grooms whose task it was to have a fresh horse team harnessed and ready for each coach. The grooms also operated bush pubs where basic refreshment and accommodation was provided. The Dagworth Hotel was such a place.
"Many travellers in this region fell victims to illness, thirst and exposure. Sometimes they died by the roadsides or at the hotel and were buried there. Others were buried at the lonely places where they died. Records are incomplete but the following are known to be interred here." (Details of six persons follow.)
