Narromine General Cemetery

It appears that the Narromine General Cemetery came into use in the early 1890s. We did find one inscription for a child who died in 1880 but it seems probable that she was not buried here. The area is divided into four denominational groups – Anglican, Catholic, United and Seventh Day Adventist – all of which are signposted. Every row is clearly marked. Both the Anglican and Catholic portions have lawn cemeteries at the rear of the monumental areas. There is also a columbarium set amidst rose gardens and lawns.
The monumental areas of the cemetery are virtually devoid of grass, weeds being controlled by means of herbicide. We encountered no real problem from broken glass and found no obvious evidence of vandalism. There is adequate parking space, litter bins and some seating are installed, but the single toilet facility remained locked. There are plenty of shade trees, the main internal roadways are paved, and the whole cemetery presents a pleasing and well-maintained appearance.
A feature of the cemetery is the large number of markers, most in the form of metal crosses. Although many of them are difficult to read, it is obvious that attempts have been made to leave as few graves as possible unmarked. By and large, the older marble and granite headstones are well preserved and easy to read. Unfortunately, the use of bore water on the lawns in the lawn cemetery has coated many of the headstones in lime scale making them more difficult to read.
Jean and I visited the cemetery on three occasions between August and October 2004, making digital images and notes of all visible inscriptions. In compiling this list, we also referred to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and to the World War 1 and World War 2 nominal rolls for further information. How to find it
From Narromine’s shopping centre, cross the railway line at the station and then turn left at the signpost onto the Parkes Road. From here it is 1.7km to the cemetery, situated on the corner of Algalah Street and Nellie Vale Road.
