Longreach General Cemetery

Longreach, in Central Western Queensland, is a town with a population of approximately 3,000. Amongst its claims to fame is that it was the principal founding location for QANTAS Airlines. The Stockman's Hall of Fame is yet another.
Longreach Cemetery comprises a general monumental area, on the left of the entrance, and a lawn cemetery on the right hand side. A feature of the cemetery is the Iningai Keeping Place, a mausoleum containing the repatriated remains of unknown Iningai people. It has been decorated with mural artwork by Indigenous artist, Les Stanley and several plaques provide information on the Iningai people and their culture.
Peter and Karen Patterson-Kane visited the cemetery in early August and made digital images of all visible inscriptions. Peter says that the grounds are fully fenced but could do with a tidy-up. He commented also on the numbers of tourists who visited the cemetery while they were there and the need to keep an eye open for the odd snake.
Inscriptions recorded date from 1890. Most of the monuments are in good order but there are quite a few that have fallen and many unmarked graves. That list was compiled by Karen from the images and notes and with reference to the Queensland indices of births, deaths and marriages and to the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional information.
How to find it
The cemetery is located at the south-eastern corner of town. From the Landsborough Highway, turn south into Lark Street and take the fifth left into Raven Road. The cemetery is on the right hand (southern) side of the road. Lat -23.448601 Long 144.261432.
