Coffs Harbour Historic
Coffs Harbour Cemetery dates from the latter part of the 19th century, the earliest inscription found being 1888. It occupies a large site that has been divided into denominational and general portions and remains entirely monumental, without a lawn section or columbarium. Although now supplanted by the modern lawn cemetery, the historic cemetery is still in regular use.
Most monuments are in reasonable condition for their age although some have fallen and lichen growth has made many of the inscriptions now difficult to read. The attractive grounds are maintained in excellent condition by Coffs Harbour City Council. The main internal roadway is sealed and adequate parking is available.
Images of all visible inscriptions were taken by Michelle Stafford in the middle of 2010. Michelle also compiled the list of inscriptions from her images and notes and with extensive reference to the NSW indices of births, deaths and marriages and to the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional information.
Michelle's images may be viewed from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. We are also grateful to Sandra Cockbain who has supplied several earlier images of temporary markers that have since disappeared or become illegible.
Note: Some of the plaques recorded here may no longer exist. A spate of thefts of bronze plaques from cemeteries in this region was reported in July 2011. The heartless thieves, when removing the markers, have also caused damage to the stones on which they were mounted. If you have family graves in this cemetery, it is suggested that you check on their integrity.
