The cemetery at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Woonona appears to have been in use between 1873 and 1932, when the first and last known burials took place. Under a Cemetery Act of 1966, the site was subsequently converted to open space. In accordance with the provisions of the Act, the names of all those known to have been buried at this location were inscribed on a memorial on the former cemetery site and the headstones removed and disposed of. It is not known how many, if any, of the actual remains or headstones were removed to other cemeteries.
Amongst those named on the memorial are eight men and boys killed in the disastrous Bulli Colliery explosion that occurred on 23 March 1887 and claimed 81 lives.
Des Cafe visited the site in June 2010 and has contributed the images he made of the memorial and its plaques. The list of inscriptions for this cemetery has been compiled from his images and with reference to the NSW indices of births, deaths and marriages and to the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional information. During our research, it was discovered that two of the dates recorded on the memorial appear to be in error.
