Beerburrum Cemetery

Address: Off Beerburrum Road Beerburrum 4517 QLD

The tiny Beerburrum Cemetery contains inscriptions dating from 1921. A notice at the cemetery entrance advises that the Beerburrum area was set aside during the First World War for soldier resettlement because it was considered suitable for light farming. It continues:

"The first burial for the cemetery is thought to have been in 1920, the year following completion of the new Beerburrum Hospital. The full number of burials is not clear, with reports ranging from 14 to 38 graves. Most of those burials were returned soldiers. By 1932 the settlement had failed, with the population declining to such low numbers that the hospital was closed. The last burial followed, a few years later, in 1932."

In recent years, the cemetery has been "adopted" by students of the Beerburrum State School who are establishing an arbor by planting a new tree on the first Tuesday of August each year in memory of those interred here. A plaque has also been erected to honour those servicemen who are buried here in unmarked graves.

Paul Fitzgerald visited Beerburrum Cemetery in September 2009 and made digital images of all visible inscriptions. Amongst them were three that post-dated 1932 but is is not known whether these three persons, or their ashes, were actually interred here. Paul has compiled the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery from his images and with reference to the Queensland indices of births, deaths and marriages and to the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional information.
