Paddington Cemetery
Address: Castlemaine Street, Milton 4064 QLD
Paddington cemetery was established in the very early days of Brisbane with known burials dating from the early 1830s. It consisted of a number of denominational portions and, as was the general practice at that time, each denomination was responsible for the maintenance and administration of its own portion and records.
Established in a low lying area, public health concerns became an issue in 1875 and Paddington Cemetery was officially closed. Some years later, a part of the site was set aside for a sports field and graves were removed. The remaining area remained disused until c. 1911 when it was decided to convert the whole site into a recreation area. Over the following several years, many more remains were removed to other cemeteries, principally to Brisbane General (Toowong) Cemetery. The greater part of the site eventually became Lang Park (now known as the Suncorp Stadium).
The list of inscriptions has been kindly supplied by Tracey Olivieri. That list has been compared with the Queensland and, prior to 1856, NSW records of births, deaths and marriages for additional information. However, some names listed were not able to be identified, probably because they have been mis-spelled in the original records.
Our thanks are expressed to Tracey for her data and the old sketch of the Paddington Cemetery. We are also grateful to journalist Roger Waite for his great picture (above) of the Suncorp Stadium and point to an excellent article on the history of Lang Park on the Suncorp website - see URLs below.
