Gunnedah General Cemetery
Address: Hunter Street, Gunnedah 2380 NSW
Gunnedah Cemetery has been photographed and listed by Liz Pritchard. The cemetery comprises Anglican, Baptist, Catholic, Methodist (Uniting), Salvation Army and Presbyterian denominational portions. There is also a small Chinese portion. New Anglican (NAng) and Catholic (NRC) portions were introduced as the original areas filled up.
The cemetery includes a number of old headstones that were removed from an earlier cemetery in Marquis Street, as well as a small number removed from a small cemetery about to be submerged under the waters of the Keepit Dam, then under construction.
The cemetery site occupies roughly 4 hectares and is not fenced on the Hunter Street boundary. The grounds include many trees, some of which have been removed in recent times as their roots became troublesome. A small toilet facility is included onsite. Internal roads are not paved. The whole site is maintained in good order by the Gunnedah Shire Council.
Liz's images may be downloaded from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. That list was compiled from her images and with reference to the NSW indices of births, deaths and marriages and to the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional information.
How to find it
From Gunnedah's CBD, turn south onto the Oxley Highway. After crossing the railway line, the highway heads west. Take the first left (Marquis Street) and first right into Hunter Street from where it is 0.4km to the cemetery.
