Gulgong General Cemetery

Address: Castlereagh Highway, Gulgong 2852 NSW

Gulgong Cemetery is a monumental cemetery dating from the 1870s. It includes a columbarium wall containing ashes from the 1970s and a lawn cemetery was established in 2008. The cemetery is divided into denominational portions and the sections and rows are, for the most part, clearly marked. However, in both the Anglican and Roman Catholic portions, there are old sections containing scattered monuments where the unmarked rows wander somewhat and are difficult to determine accurately.

A signboard at the main entrance shows a plan of the cemetery. The grounds are well fenced and maintained and there is ample parking space. Some seats are provided, town water is connected and a modern toilet block with wheelchair access has been erected.

Jean and I originally compiled this list during May 2002 from digital images and notes made of all visible inscriptions and we fully updated it in March 2004. In compiling the list, we consulted the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages, death and funeral announcements and obituaries in the Mudgee Guardian and Gulgong Advertiser newspaper and the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional data. Digital images of the inscriptions may be viewed and downloaded from the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery.

The generous assistance and encouragement of officers of the Mid-Western Regional (previously Mudgee Shire) Council is acknowledged with thanks. Considerable data on Gulgong Cemetery and other burials in the district are also held by the Gulgong Historical Society, whose extensive pioneer museum and research centre is located at 73 Herbert Street, Gulgong NSW 2852.
