Gulargambone General Cemetery

Address: Muraiman Street, Gulargambone 2828 NSW

We found the cemetery in excellent condition, with grass mown and the grounds tidy. There was almost no broken glass, although burrs were very plentiful. The grounds are divided into denominational as well as Aboriginal and Chinese portions that are mostly marked. There are no row markers. A small columbarium wall of recent construction is located next to the Methodist portion but there is no lawn cemetery. Water is reticulated. There are no amenities.

The earliest memorial we found was that of James Patrick who died in 1887 but there are earlier unmarked graves. The stones are mostly marble and granite with almost no sandstone represented. There are many markers with little or no information displayed and lots of unmarked graves.

An ambitious project was undertaken by the Gulargambone Historical Society several years ago to discover and list all known burials in the cemetery. This was completed and the results published in a quality hard-cover book, Pioneers and Personalities: Gulargambone Cemetery 1881 – 1995, that contains nearly 900 entries, a feast of biographical information and lots of photos of pioneers buried here. It is still available for the great price of $21 posted from society member, Mrs Nancy Byrne, "Inglewarra" Gulargambone NSW 2828 and is an excellent resource for those researching families in this district.

Jean and I made digital images and took notes of every visible inscription in the cemetery on 8 October 2004. In compiling this list, we also consulted the NSW index of births, deaths and marriages for further information. Digital images of the inscriptions may be viewed and downloaded from the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery.
