Charleville General Cemetery was visited and photographed by John Arthur in May 2007. He writes:

"I found the Cemetery well maintained and tidy with a full time employee keeping down the weeds and keeping everything tidy. There was very little sign of vandalism. The Catholic portion is on the northern side of the entrance road, with the Anglican & Presbyterian portions to the South. Both sections had old areas where there were no row indicators but the newer sections were well marked. A columbarium has been erected but has been little used to date."

John found and listed inscriptions dating from 1874 but it is possible that there were earlier burials at this site. There is a large number of unmarked graves. John is grateful for the assistance given him by the Charleville & District Historical Society Inc at History House who have compiled and hold a large amount of cemetery data from around the district. Family history researchers may find a visit to their website (see link below) rewarding.

We also wish to acknowledge with thanks the contribution of Ray Beilby. Ray's long-term interest in Charleville Cemetery has resulted in an accumulation of data that he has graciously made available to Australian Cemeteries Index.

John's images may be downloaded from the list of inscriptions for this cemetery. That list was compiled with reference to the Queensland BDM online search facility and to the AWM military records for both world wars for additional information.

Charleville Cemetery is located approximately 0.8km south of the Charleville Hospital.

The Cemetery is administered by the Murweh Shire Council. For further information, contact Council at PO Box 63, Charleville QLD 4470; phone (07) 4656 8355; email: info@murweh.qld.gov.au
