Gerringong General Cemetery
Address: Cnr Belinda & Percy Streets, Gerringong 2534 NSW
Gerringong General Cemetery occupies a steeply sloping site on a headland overlooking the Pacific Ocean. John Arthur, who visited and photographed the cemetery in September 2007, estimates the grade as around one in five in parts. He says that the portions include Anglican, Catholic, Presbyterian, Uniting and Interdenominational (or General). The portions are all signposted but were a little difficult for him to follow on the hill.
The monumental portions contain inscriptions dating from the 1860s and include a large number of substantial monuments with beautiful carvings. There are also several sandstone monuments, some of which are now quite badly eroded. The site also contains three columbaria, two of which face each other. John says that the cemetery was in good condition and well maintained by the Kiama Municipal Council. He found no sign of vandalism.
John's images (some of which are quite spectacular) may be downloaded from the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery. That list was compiled from his images and with reference to the NSW BDM indices and to the Australian War Memorial online military rolls for additional information.
