Long Swamp Catholic Cemetery

Long Swamp Catholic Cemetery is believed to have been established in the 1850s. After many years of neglect, control of the cemetery passed to the Evans Shire Council. Evans was subsequently merged with the Bathurst Regional Council, which has recently undertaken work to restore this historic site.
Since 1970, when she first listed the inscriptions at Long Swamp, Marie Nightingale has been working, in association with various people, societies and authorities to build as complete a record as possible of all burials in Long Swamp Cemetery. In November 2008, she published the results of her research to that point. Marie has kindly made this data available to the Australian Cemeteries Index for the benefit of family history researchers and posterity.

Regeneration of the Cemetery has engendered much support from a few local descendants of people buried there. Following a major cleanup of the cemetery, a celebration was held on the site on 16 November 2008 (see picture above). The Long Swamp Cemetery Get Together was organized by Marie and her husband Errol and attended by Fr Harry Quigley (Bathurst), Cr Monica Morse (Bathurst Regional Council and representatives from The National Trust, Bathurst Historical Society and Family History Groups, plus 160 relatives of people buried in Long Swamp Cemetery.
Restoration of the monuments has since been completed, financed by a generous grant from the Bathurst Regional Council's Heritage Fund. Particular thanks are also extended to Kerry Roberts, Stone Scene, Mudgee, for restoring the inscriptions (several of which were illegible). He and his wife Vanessa did most of the work for free.
The list of all inscriptions for this cemetery has been compiled with reference to the NSW BDM online search facility for additional information. Marie invites contributions of additional material and any necessary amendments to her data. Please contact her though this site.

Long Swamp Cemetery is located on the old road to Bathurst, approximately 12km north of Trunkey.
