Clarence Town General Cemetery
Address: Cemetery Fire Road, Clarence Town 2321 NSW
Ruth King photographed and listed the inscriptions in the Clarence Town General Cemetery in July 2007. She found memorials from as early as the 1840s. The site is set out in denominational portions of Anglican, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian and Uniting Church. There is also a small private Catholic portion.
Although the cemetery is maintained in excellent condition by Council, many of the older stones have fallen and broken. I understand that this is mainly due to the repeated flooding of the site. The damage caused by the most recent flood, in March 2007, was particularly severe.
As well as listing all visible inscriptions, Ruth has been able to add almost 100 unmarked graves, details of which she has obtained from Council records and local church registers.
In compiling the list, extensive reference has been made to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and to military records for further information. Ruth's images may be viewed and downloaded from the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery.
How to find it
Cemetery Fire Road runs west off Queen Street on the southern edge of town. From that intersection, it is almost 1km to the cemetery.
