Condobolin General Cemetery

Address: Maitland & Boona Streets, Condobolin 2877 NSW

The Condobolin General Cemetery list of inscriptions and all of the images have been kindly contributed by Garry Batt, whose family came from the Condobolin district. Garry, who has been compiling data on the cemetery over several years, visited the cemetery again during March/April 2007 and made digital images of all visible inscriptions. He writes:

"This cemetery contains inscriptions dating from 1878. It is divided into denominational portions and also includes a columbarium. While the denominational sections are clearly marked there are no row markers. There is a lawn cemetery at the Eastern end.

"There are several taps strategically placed over the whole area but when I visited the last time in April they only dribbled water. Litter bins are placed around the area. The internal roadways are bitumen.

"Signs of vandalism over a long period of time are obvious with some areas being covered with glass crystals. One fox hole under a grave was noticed and numerous rabbit holes. The cemetery was infested with cat-head burrs when I visited and it is advised anyone walking around the cemetery should wear shoes with thick soles. The cemetery suffered from neglect up until 2001 but is now reasonably maintained by council."

Garry estimates that there are approximately 1000 unmarked graves in the general cemetery. His list includes whatever information he has been able to gather on these.

"I visited the undertaker, the council, the ladies club, the local Anglican and Catholic churches, the local court house and the local historical association, asking what records they had. I tried the local newspaper; they have their back issues to about 1906 on film but they weren't big on obituaries. They don't have a monumental mason in Condo."

In compiling the list, reference was made to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and to military records for further information. The images may be viewed and downloaded from the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery.
