Binnaway General Cemetery

Address: Leaders Road, Binnaway 2395 NSW

This small rural cemetery came as a delightful surprise. Its condition easily surpasses all other cemeteries we have visited in the district. We found its extensive grounds in beautiful condition with the lawns close mown and trimmed around the graves. The stones were all erect, mounds topped up and weeds within enclosures well controlled. Each denominational portion is clearly marked and some welcome shaded seating installed. The ubiquitous broken glass and rabbit holes were noticeably absent. It is obvious that, apart from Council maintenance, a great deal of local effort has been put into improving this site, planting trees and shrubs and placing brass plaques on previously unmarked graves. The results are a great tribute to those involved. If only more cemeteries were like Binnaway!

According to the Binnaway Progress Association the cemetery was dedicated on 11 March 1881. It says, "Since 1991 the cemetery has undergone extensive restoration with community fund raising providing money for grave plaques and shrubs."

We visited the cemetery on 17 November 2005 and made digital images and notes of all visible inscriptions. In compiling the attached list, we also referred to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and to the World War 1 and World War 2 Nominal Rolls for further information. Digital images of all inscriptions may be viewed and downloaded from the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery.
